High heritability of music test scores was also demonstrated. Prior to this study, the first genome wide scan in the Finnish pedigrees suggested that musical aptitude is associated with several chromosomal areas in the human genome. These methods can be applied to normal human traits like music perception and performance. The development of genome technologies and bioinformatics has enabled the identification of genetic variants underlying complex human traits. There is an abundance of data about the neurophysiological effects of music on the human brain, but heritability and especially molecular studies have been lacking. Music perception and practice represents complex cognitive functions of the brain. Besides, the research reveals trends which validate the suitability of music as a tool for teaching English pronunciation in the Czech context of ELT. Although the research results do not unequivocally confirm the hypothesis, the correlation between musical competence and foreign language pronunciation abilities cannot be negated. The research is realized by the means of background questionnaires, recordings, phonetic transcriptions and scoring tables. The participants’ pronunciation is assessed in two separate tasks – in reading out loud and imitating audio recordings – which are afterwards contrasted to measure also the improvement. The conducted research is aimed at testing out the hypothesis that students with musical abilities perform better in mimicking a foreign language phonological system than students who have not developed their innate musical predispositions. Additionally, the interconnection of musical and language aptitudes is illustrated by a number of research studies and scientific articles. In the background chapter, it is demonstrated in what aspects the tool of music complies with the contemporary views, methods and techniques of teaching English pronunciation. ![]() Pronunciation and to ascertain the interrelationship between musical competence and foreign language pronunciation abilities. The purpose of the thesis is to theoretically underpin the use of music in teaching English
